How Long Does a Headshot Session Take?

Before booking, most people ask the same thing: how long does a headshot session take? How much time should I set aside?

Some imagine a quick 15-minute stop. Others worry it will take half the day. The truth sits somewhere in between.

It really depends on what you need. If you just want one clean corporate photo, it can be fast. If you’re updating your brand or need multiple looks, it naturally takes longer.

At Studio Pod, we’ve seen sessions range from quick and efficient to more relaxed and in-depth. Let’s go over what actually affects the timing.

How long does a headshot session take?

It really comes down to what you need.

If you just want one solid corporate photo, you can be in and out in about 10 to 20 minutes. No outfit changes. No overthinking. Just clean and professional.

If you want options, different expressions, maybe a second outfit, plan closer to 30 to 60 minutes. That gives you space to relax and actually look like yourself.

Building a personal brand or updating multiple platforms? That usually takes 1 to 2 hours. Actors and creatives often need more time to capture range.

Adding hair and makeup can add another 30 to 90 minutes.

More variety equals more time. Simple as that.

What Determines How Long a Headshot Session Takes?

There are a few specific things that affect timing. Let’s go over them.

1. Your Goal

This is the biggest factor.

If you need one clean LinkedIn photo, that’s quick. One outfit. One setup. Focused and efficient.

Team headshots move quickly, too, because the lighting is already set. Each person usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

Branding sessions take longer because we’re creating options. Different expressions. Maybe outfit changes. More range.

Actors and creatives need the most flexibility. Different looks require different energy and sometimes lighting adjustments.

The more variety you want, the more time you should allow.

2. How Many Looks You Want

A “look” usually means a change in outfit, layering, hairstyle, background, or lighting.

So it makes sense that each new look will add more time. That’s usually around 10 to 20 minutes.

Most professionals only need one or two. Branding clients may want three or four. Actors often need more.

One thing we’ve learned? People often think they need more looks than they actually do. So, plan well to get the most out of your time.

3. Studio vs On-Location

Studio sessions are the most efficient because lighting is controlled, backgrounds are ready, and any necessary adjustments can happen instantly.

On-location sessions take longer. There’s travel, setting up equipment, adjusting to natural light, and handling weather. These all add time.

4. Hair and Makeup

Hair and makeup can take about 15 minutes for a quick touch-up. But if you’re going for full professional styling, plan closer to an hour or even a bit more.

We usually schedule that before your camera time starts, so your session stays focused and smooth.

5. Expression Coaching

This is the part most people don’t think about.

Almost no one walks in and instantly looks relaxed on camera. The first few minutes are about settling in. Dropping your shoulders. Fixing posture. Softening your expression so it feels natural.

Great headshots come from small details, like how your eyes connect or how your jaw is set. If we rush that, it shows.

What Happens During the Session?

We start with a quick chat. Just a few minutes to understand what you need the photo for and how you want to come across. That helps us make smart decisions from the start.

Then we take a few test shots. This is where we adjust lighting and make sure everything looks right on camera. Sometimes what feels good in person needs a small tweak on screen.

During the shoot, we guide you the whole time. Simple posture adjustments. Relaxing your shoulders. Tiny expression changes. Nothing dramatic. Just small refinements.

If you’re changing outfits, we keep it smooth and efficient.

Most clients are surprised by one thing: it feels much more relaxed than they expected.

How Long Does It Take to Receive Final Headshots?

The question we get asked after each session is how long do headshots take to be ready. Your session and your delivery timeline are two different things.

A few days after your shoot, we’ll send you a private gallery so you can go through the images and pick your favorites. Once you choose them, we start the final edits.

Retouching usually takes a few days to about a week. It depends on how many images you select and how detailed the adjustments are.

We don’t over-edit. We’ll tidy up small distractions like a temporary blemish or flyaway hair, but you’ll still look like yourself.

If you’re on a tight deadline, just tell us before the session. We can often speed things up when needed.

Can a Headshot Session Really Be Done in 5 Minutes?

Yes. You can take a photo in five minutes. But there’s a difference between taking a photo and creating a strong headshot.

In five minutes, you’ll likely get one usable image. That’s it.

When you give yourself 30 to 60 minutes, things change. You relax. Your expression softens. We make small posture adjustments. We refine the lighting. You get options instead of just one frame.

Those extra minutes are usually what separate “this works” from “this really represents me.”

How to Make Your Headshot Session More Efficient

Want your session to move smoothly and actually feel easy? Here’s what helps:

  • Pick outfits the day before. Try them on. Make sure they fit well and feel like you. If you’re adjusting or tugging at clothing, it shows on camera.

  • Choose solid colors over busy patterns. Small prints and logos can distract from your face.

  • Bring one backup option. Sometimes something looks different on camera than it does in the mirror.

  • Know your goal. Is this for LinkedIn, your company website, or speaking events? The use determines the style.

  • Get a good night’s sleep and hydrate. It genuinely shows in your eyes and skin.

Final Thoughts

For most professionals, 30 to 60 minutes is enough for a strong, polished headshot. If you want more variety or full branding images, plan for 1 to 2 hours. If you’re adding hair and makeup, schedule that time separately.

The right amount of time makes a difference. When you’re not rushed, your expression looks more natural and confident.

If you’re ready for an updated headshot, book your session at Studio Pod and set aside the time you actually need. It shows in the final result.
