Studio Pod
Student IDs

Student ID photos the card office actually wants to issue.

Studio Pod replaces the freshman-orientation queue, the bad webcam, and the manual file-renaming pipeline with a self-serve studio that lives in the card office year-round. Every student gets a uniform, compliant photo in five minutes. Card-office staff stops running the booth and starts processing IDs.

The problem

Issuing campus IDs shouldn't take all of orientation week.

The student ID workflow at most universities still looks the way it did in 1995. The card office has the same three problems every August:

The orientation

The orientation queue burns the first week

Freshman orientation funnels every incoming student through one card office. A line out the door, a webcam on a folding table, a card-office staffer manually taking each photo - the bottleneck is a person, not a process.

Inconsistent photos

Inconsistent photos break access control

Webcam lighting changes hour to hour. Some IDs come out too dark; some come out blown out. Inconsistent photos undermine RFID-paired facial verification at the dining hall, dorm scanner, and library gate.

Reissues +

Reissues + transfers eat the rest of the year

Lost IDs, name changes, transfer students, late enrollees - every one requires the card office to fire up the camera, fix the lighting, take the photo, and re-process. The orientation problem just keeps happening one student at a time.

The solution

A self-serve student ID booth that lives in the card office.

S1 or S3 Studio Pod installs inside the card office. Every incoming student walks up, taps their ID, runs a five-minute session, and the photo lands in the card-print system before they leave. Card-office staff stops running the booth and starts processing the cards. Orientation throughput jumps without adding headcount.

  • Self-serve · no card-office staff at the booth. Pods run unattended. The on-screen flow walks each student through the session. Card-office staff handles the print queue, not the camera. Orientation throughput stops being labor-bound.
  • Studio-grade photos at orientation pace. Canon DSLR + patented multi-source DMX lighting + AI-driven background lock. Every student photo lands at the same exposure, same crop, same standard - whether the line is 5 students long or 500.
  • Push directly to the card-print queue. API integration pushes each photo to your card-print system (CBORD, Atrium, Transact, Blackboard, OneCard, Heartland, etc.) auto-named to the student's ID number. No manual file shuffling, no naming errors, no waiting.
  • FERPA-ready · US-soil data storage. All photo data stored in US-jurisdiction servers, encrypted in transit and at rest. FERPA-compliant by design. Photos can be auto-purged after card issuance if your data-retention policy requires it.
  • Reissues + late enrollees in two minutes. Lost ID, name change, transfer student, off-cycle enrollment - any student walks up to the pod, taps their record, captures, prints. No appointment, no scheduling, no card-office time spent on the camera.
  • Same pod handles orientation peak + steady state. S1 / S3 installs are sized for orientation-week throughput AND day-in-day-out reissues. The card office doesn't need separate infrastructure for the August peak vs. the rest of the year.
FAQ

Common questions, answered.

Which card-print systems does Studio Pod integrate with?

Studio Pod exposes a REST API and a delivery webhook that the major campus card platforms ingest directly. Active integrations: CBORD, Atrium, Transact (CampusID), Blackboard, OneCard, Heartland OneCard, EBI. If your card platform isn't named here, a 30-minute scoping call covers the integration pattern - most platforms accept a named file delivered to a directory, which the pod can do out of the box.

Is the photo FERPA-compliant?

Yes. Photos are stored in US-jurisdiction servers, encrypted in transit and at rest, and access-gated to your card office's authenticated users only. Studio Pod retains no rights to student image data; your university owns the photos. We can configure auto-purge of photos from our servers after card issuance to match your data-retention policy.

How does this work during freshman orientation week?

Two patterns: (1) The pod handles the orientation queue directly - students self-serve, no card-office staff at the camera, 1 student every ~2 minutes for unattended use, scaling to 200-300 students per pod per day. (2) For peak orientation days, a Roadie ships in alongside the installed pod to double throughput temporarily. Both patterns push directly to your card-print system.

What about reissues, name changes, and transfer students?

Every off-cycle case uses the same booth. The student walks up, the on-screen flow asks for student ID number, the captured photo overwrites the existing record in your card system. Total interaction: ~3 minutes. The card-office staffer never touches the camera.

Does the lighting work for all skin tones equally?

Yes - and this matters at a multi-thousand-student scale. Studio Pod's multi-source DMX rig was engineered specifically to avoid the single-light-source failure mode where dark skin reads as 'low contrast' and light skin reads as 'blown out.' Every student photographs against the same calibrated lighting recipe; the output reads consistent across the entire class roster.

Can sponsors underwrite the pod via the Partner Program?

Yes. The Studio Pod Partner Program lets corporate recruiters, brand sponsors, or alumni foundations fund a pod for the card office as a sponsorship. The sponsor gets branded exterior wrap + on-screen CTA + delivery-email placement; the card office gets a fully-funded pod at no cost. See /partner-program for the full model.
